Chapter 9
Austin, Texas
Spring 2012
Clara had been glad for an excuse to visit her sister again. The book needed to move on, and Lizzie was the right choice.
Clara had dropped the green leather book in a bubble wrap envelope and printed Lizzie’s name and address on it. As she walked by the tidy little bungalow for the second time, she clutched the package in her arms. She needed to make a decision. She’d decided in the end not to tell Trish what she was doing with the book. Better she was left in ignorance so she didn’t feel awkward around Lizzie in the future. Keeping secrets could strain a friendship, and Trish already knew more than might make her comfortable.
Clara’s feelings for the book had evolved over the years. It had been a burden, a record of a rich cultural past, a diary for her worst and best memories, and a window into a world of magic. It was time for the book to make its way back to the Pack, and in Austin it was that much closer. And she knew that Lizzie was a good choice. She’d poked around a little more. She hadn’t learned much, but she liked what she’d learned. Lizzie was responsible, with a modestly successful small business, friends she’d had for a lifetime, and parents who were still a part of her life. Nothing definitive, but Clara’s gut said yes.
She nodded her head firmly and walked with purpose to Lizzie’s mailbox. Yes—she could feel it in her bones: she was making the right decision. Before she placed the package in the mailbox, she tried to think of what she could say, what message would be meaningful to Lizzie. She drew a blank, so she opened heart and mind and let the message find itself.
I can only hope as I pass along this beautiful burden that the book’s next home will bring it closer to the Pack, its one true home. I wish you everything that is good, Elizabeth, as you assume from me this gift, this burden.
She couldn’t help but imbue that message with some of the sorrow she felt in relinquishing the book—it had been with her for so many years now—and some of the sorrow she felt at letting go of the only connection she still had with Logan. She smiled slightly. Apparently, her inner voice liked to take a formal tone. That was just fine. It seemed appropriate for the last message she would record in the book.
She briefly clutched the thick envelope—then she smiled and placed it in the mailbox.
